Birders usually find Northern Flickers, a class of large and beautifully plumed woodpeckers, on the ground where they make a good living rooting out and eating ants and beetles.
But our photographer, Jim Colligan, found this fellow surveying his domain this week from a tree branch deep in the Mashomack woods, before getting suspicious and dashing away.
